PHH Mortgage was fined for failing to pay overtime wages to 13 New Jersey workers, according to state officials.

The New Jersey Department of Labor and Workforce Development assessed $1,176.40 in penalties and fees against the company for violating state overtime pay regulations, department spokesman Kevin Smith told MortgageDaily.com.

Upon investigating a dispute over unpaid overtime, the department found the PHH workers were due wages totaling $4,263.96, he added.

The case was concluded in September and the employees have been compensated, Smith said.

"We are on the job making sure that New Jersey's working men and women are receiving all of the pay they are due for the work they accomplish," the department said in a recent announcement -- adding that it collected more than $500,000 in wages owed to more than 1,000 workers during October.

The Mt. Laurel, N.J.-based lender, which originated $14.0 billion last quarter and recently purchased the assets of CUNA Mutual Mortgage Corp., was spun off from Cendant Corp. in January.

PHH officials could not immediately be reached for comment.
