Mortgage lenders placed prominently among New Mexico's most complained-about businesses and services.

The state's Attorney General, Patricia Madrid, released the top-ten list of business categories with the most complaints filed during 2005.

Placing fourth on the list was "small loans and mortgage lending," according to the announcement.

"Even though the Attorney General's office does not handle mortgage issues ... most of the complaints received about mortgages deal with items added onto a consumer's mortgage contract that were not disclosed or items that the consumer did not understand prior to signing the contract," the statement said.

New Mexico noted complaints about mortgage issues are referred to its Financial Institutions Division.

Complaints about auto sales topped the list, the announcement said, followed by collection practices and door-to-door sales.

The Attorney General said a total of 4,464 written complaints were received last year in addition to nearly 75,000 telephone inquiries.
