A look at the top 25 conventional lenders during 2001

Wells Fargo Mortgage Inc. held the top spot during 2001 for conventional mortgage loan production, according to the MortgageDataWeb100 produced by Computer Business Methods, Inc., or CBMI. The company provides Internet-based market information reporting and retrieval systems for the residential finance industry.

During 2001, Wells Fargo closed 467,913 conventional loans for $74.5 billion. Last month the Des Moines, Iowa lender reported that total mortgage production -- including refinances and purchases -- was $194.0 billion for the year.

Next on the list was Washington Mutual, with 342,457 loans closed for $69.1 billion. Washington Mutual, which achieved its top five status through a number of recent acquisitions, has recently been battling customer service issues relating to the integration of portfolios owned by the companies it acquires. The Seattle company reported last month that total 2001 production was $155.8 billion.

The third largest lender in this category was Bank of America, FSB, with $55.0 billion, followed by Countrywide, at $49.0 billion. Rounding out the top five was Chase, with $30.3 billion in conventional production during 2001.
