The number of mortgage industry jobs jumped during June, according to the monthly employment report from the Bureau of Labor Statistics of the U.S. Department of Labor. The seasonably adjusted number of jobs for mortgage brokers and mortgage bankers rose to 365,000 from 358,000 in May. This is the highest for the sector since February.

Mortgage employment is more than ten percent higher than June 2001.

The jump in mortgage employment was fueled by an increase in loan application activity. The Mortgage Bankers Association of America reported earlier this week that total loan applications were up more than forty percent from their levels in late May.

The Bureau reported that total U.S. unemployment rose to 5.9% from 5.8% in May.
