Mortgage wholesaler InterFirst Wholesale Mortgage Lending announced it was named "Affiliate Company of the Year" by the National Association of Mortgage Brokers (NAMB). The company was awarded the designation at NAMB's recent annual conference in Cleveland, Ohio.

InterFirst, part of Amsterdam-based ABN AMRO Bank N.V., said it was recognized for its efforts in promoting the goals, projects, activities and functions of NAMB. "At InterFirst we believe that the broker segment of the mortgage industry is incredibly valuable in providing consumers with expert advice, guidance and counsel," said William A. Newman, InterFirst president.

NAMB is a trade association representing more than 13,000 mortgage brokers. The Washington, D.C.-based group reports that there were 30,000 mortgage brokerage companies in 2000 employing an estimated 240,000 people. Last week, the Bureau of Labor Statistics of the U.S. Department of Labor reported that total jobs in the mortgage industry, including those at mortgage brokerage and mortgage banking firms, were 365,000 in June.

Commenting on the award, Armand Cosenza Jr., CRMS, NAMB president said, "InterFirst upholds NAMB's mission and represents, within the wholesale mortgage industry, a high level of integrity, professionalism, and quality. Through its involvement with NAMB and its commitment to the success of mortgage brokers, InterFirst has earned 'Affiliate Company of the Year'."

InterFirst made up more than 80% of ABN AMRO's U.S. Mortgage Group's $7.18 billion May production. ABN AMRO reported May year-to-date production of $39.23 billion.
