A Kansas City woman has received the most prestigious honor from the trade group representing mortgage brokers nationally. The award was given during the group's recent annual conference.

Melissa Walker, owner of AmeriFirst Mortgage in Kansas City, Kansas, was honored as the 2002 Mortgage Broker of the Year by the National Association of Mortgage Brokers (NAMB). Walker has owned her company since 1995.

NAMB presented the award at its recent annual conference held in Cleveland, Ohio. During the event, mortgage wholesaler InterFirst Wholesale Mortgage Lending was named "Affiliate Company of the Year."

The "Mortgage Broker of the Year" award was sponsored by Fannie Mae. "Melissa's years of dedicated service to the Kansas Association of Mortgage Brokers, the NAMB and the mortgage industry as a whole epitomize the spirit of the Mortgage Broker of the Year Award," said Dana Keeney, principal, Fannie Mae eBusiness. "Fannie Mae and its lender partners are proud to sponsor NAMB's most prestigious honor, which represents to the entire industry an individual's commitment to excellence, quality service and adherence to the highest ethical standards."

Walker has owned AmeriFirst Mortgage since 1995, when she was just 25 years old. The company has grown from 2 employees to 14 employees, with offices in Kansas, Missouri and Florida. She began her affiliation with NAMB in 1997 and was elected to the Kansas Association of Mortgage Brokers Board of Directors in 1998. Since them, she has served as president of the state association, testified in front of the
Kansas Senate and served on Fannie Mae's Advisory Council. Walker also initiated her state association's involvement in the building of a local Habitat for Humanity home in 2001.
