The Mortgage Bankers Association of America (MBA) will hold its annual convention this fall in San Diego.

Chairman and chief executive officer of Fannie Mae Franklin Raines and a senior executive from Freddie Mac will lead a general session at the convention, as will Mel Martinez, secretary of the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, according to MBA's website.

The convention will be October 19-22 with a state and local workshop being held October 17-18. Registration for the convention is $745 for members and $1,845 for nonmembers if paid by Sept. 19. Afterwards, it's $100 more for each type of registration and $200 more for registration after October 15, MBA said.

This convention marks the 90th held by the group.

During the conference, there will be three "tracks" of sessions to attend, business strategies, technology and management.

Business strategy sessions being offered include "Opportunities In Mexico and Latin America," "How to Create a Successful Wholesale Operation," and a legislative and regulatory update. Technology sessions include a MISMO update and Web-based transaction platforms.

Those in the industry who've been overwhelmed by locking in record numbers of borrowers to record low rates may not have had a chance to see the now defunct Sunday evening 60 minutes segment featuring former president Bill Clinton and former Senator and former presidential contender Bob Dole. The convention will do that segment one better, or at least one different when one of the general sessions features a point/counterpoint with Bob Dole and former vice-president Al Gore, hosted by Fox News's Greta Van Susteren.

A behind-the-scenes look at the San Diego Zoo is scheduled as a special event, as well as a performance by the Beach Boys. Certain activities, like these, may not be included in the price of registration. Refer to MBA's website for further details.
