An investor publication has named Angelo Mozilo the best CEO in the mortgage industry.
Countrywide Financial Corp.'s chief executive was honored as the Best CEO in America in the mortgage finance category by Institutional Investor Magazine.
Mozilo's company recently announced it was the nation's largest mortgage originator and servicer. Countrywide reported production of $363 billion for 2004 and ended the year with a servicing portfolio of $838 billion.
The magazine said the third annual ranking identifies the top CEOs in 62 industries, as rated by nearly 1,700 investment professionals and close to 500 brokerage and asset management firms. The investors and analysts responded to the magazine's CEO poll, which asked that they name their first, second and third choices for best CEO for a given industry.
Some of the winning CEOs demonstrate an ability to seize growth opportunities with well-considered, well-integrated acquisitions, and others boast a sophisticated knowledge of customer needs, the magazine reported. The survey respondents particularly value chief executives who can recognize when a company is headed in the wrong direction and quickly change its course, and those who tell the truth -- good or bad -- about corporate performance.
Earlier this month, investment publication Morningstar Inc. named Golden West Financial's chief executives Herb and Marion Sandler its 2004 CEOs of the Year based on a number of qualities including exemplary corporate stewardship; a proven track record of allocating capital efficiently and generating shareholder value; consistent, above-average financial performance; and ability to "focus on long-term value creation despite the market's many incentives to focus on short-term issues."
