The Federal Housing Administration has a new commissioner.

Brian Montgomery was confirmed as commissioner of the Federal Housing Administration on Monday by the U.S. Senate, Andrew Gray, spokesman for the U.S. Senate Committee on Banking, Housing and Urban Affairs, verified.

The Bush administration nominee came up before the Senate committee in May.

As the new U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development assistant secretary, Montgomery oversees FHA, a vital tool for expanding homeownership, the committee said in an announcement.

The previous FHA commissioner was John Weicher.

Montgomery most recently served as deputy assistant to the president, the announcement said, and he has gained direct knowledge of housing and community development programs by previously serving at the Texas Department of Housing and Community Affairs and the Texas Department of Commerce.
